Fragments in the Fog
-A Tale of Overcoming One's Demons-
Coming Summer 2026
A very personal piece, this track is about resilience in the face of waves of depression; feeling lost in an endless sea of nothing, hoping to float towards something to grab onto until the weight lifts.
The video leans heavily into symbolism around this concept and features a poem, from an empathetic perspective, to instill hope. The music has a duality in tone, where it can feel melancholic/heartbreaking, while also feeling that hope and sense of drive to just hold on/keep going.
The symbolism, color grading, and shots are guided by that duality. For example, the lone buoy being bombarded by cyclical wave loops (forward and reverse), representing the person suffering from depression, could invoke a sad feeling, while also showing resilience: you will survive this; even when the waves seem to overtake you. The color grading and shots that follow surviving the worst of the waves reflect cleansing and hope, with the sun reemerging and the person having resurfaced, able to take in the beauty of life once again.
If you can relate to these feelings, you're not alone 💙
While produced/edited with DaVinci Resolve and Clipchamp, this video would not have been possible without the incredible stock footage and 3D/CG (no AI, ever) from the brilliant videographers at Pexels.com

The Composer's Journey | Mike T. Bain #BerlinComposersJourney
'The Composer's Journey', created for a fun challenge hosted
by Orchestral Tools, in which the brief tasked those
participating with scoring this beautiful short film/ad
using only their Berlin Free Orchestra library.

I chose to approach this piece by writing a theme;
introducing it in broken parts as the character is struggling
to initially work out the composition, slowly coming together
as she gets inspired along her commute, before settling
in full in a heartfelt conclusion, having gotten past her
writer's block and found her creative flow.

JOKER 2019 TRAILER Re-scored | Mike T. Bain
A track named 'Fall into Madness', this piece
was composed as a personal creative challenge,
practicing scoring to the trailer of one of my favorite films,
2019's JOKER.
I wanted to go in a different direction than the
tone of the tracks in the original trailer,
which is unsettling in a different way
(starting with tension and building to an ironic, happy tune).
I started with finding a theme based on the character's
mental health struggles, getting into his head and the
tragedy that his circumstances and pain
bring about, opting for a dark/sinister, simple/broken
melody, which twists and manifests in a
few different ways throughout.
Switching tone near the end, following the remark
thatArthur's life is a comedy, was quite fun, introducing
confidence and swagger with the beat as he's transformed
into Joker, with distant circus-like ambience.
The piece ends by bringing back that original, dark theme;
the madness solidified.
This piece was composed for practice only, thus it is UNOFFICIAL.
